Hello Nancy, I just purchased one of your delightful paintings, "Coming Home", from Roger's Gardens in Corona Del Mar, CA. I "am owned" by 5 devine felines, and this enchanting painting, with the cat looking out of the window, just captured my heart. Thank you for your artistic vision and delicious talent. You've helped put a smile on my face, since I have just hung it over my desk next to a window looking out on my garden. Diana L.

Specifically, the Four Seasons prints with Trees will be the focal point of the room. Here's my dilemma - what color should we paint the walls to be complement the prints?

The colors in the prints are so vibrant, and I want to enhance them with the right paint choice. We've been struggling with this for many months and I am hoping that someone has a great idea!

Below is a recent article written for Portfolio Magazine. Hope you enjoy!

Nancy Thomas: Through an Artist’s Eye

      Garden Dreams

Spring makes me think of delicious fresh salads: tiny, dewy, still alive lettuce leaves, garlic chives snipped as they grow, the same with parsley. I’m not a great gardener or even a great cook but there is something about a raised bed of glowing vegetables that inspires me.

Now the question becomes-- inspires me to do what?. Inspires me to cook, to garden, or maybe to capture the moments in a painting (as an artist, I think like this).

Now that I am thinking of this, I realize what it truly inspires me to do is old-fashioned daydreaming. To daydream about how to arrange the growing rows of vegetables and herbs so the colors blend well. Yellow corn next to red and green peppers, long grass-like chives next to curly green parsley mixed with the tiny yellow leaves of lemon thyme. Oh, and purple basil! A beautiful scene!

Next, the joy of putting it all together in a handcrafted burl bowl with a little olive oil and vinegar and a dash of salt and pepper.

Beside this bowl, let’s add some fresh-cut flowers from the raised flowerbed. Had I mentioned the raised flower bed? In this daydream, I now have three raised beds, vegetable, herbs, and flowers each bed filled with perfectly measured soil ingredients to fill the nutrient needs of each lively plant.

Add crisp linen napkins with a tiny sprig of thyme and a honeybee embroidered on the corners (in the age of chivalry a maiden would embroider a tiny sprig of thyme and a honeybee on her scarf to give to the bravest knight). …I could go on and on with every minute detail…. And I have another painting. And a lovely lunch.

You realize, of course, this is all in my daydreams. I love this! Anything is possible!

Now to reality. The grocery store is a quick trip for baby lettuce. I will clip a little chives and parsley from the tangled overgrown herb garden, and the salad bowl is slightly chipped pottery. As for the napkins, they are wrinkled cotton right out of the dryer. Definitely, fresh-cut flowers! Buttercups and violets.

Gardening, cooking, painting, umm, maybe tomorrow.

      "The New American Folk Art"
Article by Nancy Thomas for Portfolio Weekly Magazine

To reacquaint myself with the concept of getting away from it all, this past May I took off for Ashville and the Smokies with only a slight urge to visit a few art and craft spots famous in that area. After Ashville, I drove a few miles down to Hendersonville, NC, drawn by a shop with the intriguing name of “Olivers’ Southern Folk Art.”

At Olivers’ – tucked away in a strip mall outside of Hendersonville - I was overwhelmed with a display of hundreds of astounding paintings of artists from Oregon to Alabama, from Mississippi to Washington DC., paintings of great color, inspiration and appeal.

As an artist, I knew of the movement to which these paintings belong and which many names have tried to capture – visionary, self-taught, outsider - but I had rarely seen such a broad and varied collection (except in the home of Baron and Ellin Gordon of Williamsburg, who are the premier collectors of fine self-taught art in the world). It is a movement that has been simmering for some time – first spotted by very sophisticated art lovers (like the Gordons) and now being discovered by a broader group of collectors (like George Clooney and his crew who were filming in the area and who bought almost 30 paintings at Olivers’ a couple of weeks before I showed up).

This “New American Folk Art” (my preferred term because, though, much is from the South, its artists are actually from all over the country) includes artists of many different backgrounds, some whose work is of great expressiveness and power and others of gentleness and wonderful style. The one unifying characteristic of their art is its genuineness: it is uncontrived and from the soul. You can see the art in it.

Some of the earlier pieces of this emerging genre (by artist like Holley, Darger and Thornton Dial) have sold for thousands of dollars and are appearing now more and more often in major museums – the Whitney, The American Museum of Folk Art and the New Museum in New York, the High in Atlanta and in many others around the country (not to mention in the just-opened gift to ODU of the Baron and Ellin Gordon Galleries). The remarkable fact, however, is that much of the work remains surprisingly affordable.

As an artist, I decided I had to own some of it, and it was not a great leap to think I should share it with my customers and friends in my Yorktown and Williamsburg Galleries. So I bought (and have later bought more) Michael Banks, Sesow, John “Cornbread” Anderson, Mario Mesa, and Carl Dixon. I have added others like Sherry Dooley and Carleton Bakkum (who is the Episcopal minister here in Yorktown and does extraordinary work). I had the work packed up and sent back to Yorktown.

After he totaled up the invoice Ted Oliver said he would like to see me coming before George Clooney and his bunch any day. Oh well. Everyone is allowed one vice.

        Nancy,
You MUST MUST MUST put the third weekend of October on your calendar and come to Tuscaloosa/Northport, Alabama for the Kentuck Festival of the Arts. Many of these artists you mentioned show their work there and this is where many of them were "discovered." You would just love it. Visit www.kentuck.org for more info.

Michael Banks, Cornbread, and other INCREDIBLE artists that you would love are there to sell their work. I'd love to show you around!

I've long been an admirer and collector of your art. On a visit to Williamsburg (and after seeing the huge grapevine wreath covered with the wooden fruits and vegetable ornaments) I spent MORE time going back and forth to Yorktown, with my two children in tow, than we spent touring historic Williamsburg.

Your picture in the COLLECTING AMERICAN COUNTRY as long been an inspiration to me!

Do come to Alabama this fall!

Yorktown - December 3, 2007 – Last Wednesday, November 28, Nancy Thomas traveled by invitation to Washington DC to see her one-of-a-kind ornament, commemorating the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown, on the official “Blue Room” White House tree at a reception hosted by First Lady Laura Bush.

This was the second time Thomas has done an ornament for the official White House tree (the Blue Room is the traditional site for the “official” tree): the first was in 1981 when she was selected, along with seven other artists, by the American Folk Art Museum to create ornaments for the White House Tree. That time each artist created 100 ornaments, and the seven artists and their spouses were then hosted by Nancy Reagan.

This time The Colonial National Historical Park Superintendent, Dan Smith, asked Thomas to create an ornament along the theme of her Yorktown 4th of July poster which commemorated the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown.

Thomas was given a simple gold ball ornament about 7 inches in diameter. “In the round things have to be rearranged,” Thomas said. “You have to make every part of it interesting and representative of your park. That was very challenging.”

To begin, Thomas painted the ball black, and outlined the images in white, and – over a period of two weeks – worked out the final 360 degree piece in full color. “The image included Powhatan, John Rolfe (who married Pocahontas), Gowan Pamphlet – the first prominent black preacher in the Colonies - and George Washington, as well as the Godspeed and the famous compass rose.”

The Colonial National Historical Park ornament is part of this year’s White House tree theme, “Holiday in the National Parks,” where artists from around the country were selected by Park Superintendents to create ornaments for each of the 391 sites.

“Creating this ornament was wonderful and a tremendous honor,” said Thomas. “It made me value highly that our country has preserved these important places. And I became truly in awe of all the different places, people and perspectives of our country.”

In accordance with White House policy, The Colonial National Historical ornament is one of a kind, and duplication is prohibited.

Thanks Nancy for such brillant work.
