Welcome to the Nancy THomas Gallery

Joan Tatum Pottery

Joan Schafer Tatum was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 4, 1940. In 1964, she graduated from the College of William and Mary with a degree in Fine Arts. For 48 years, Joan made her home in Newport News at her Hilltop Studio alongside her husband Sam and two children. She showcased her work at local art galleries, including On the Hill in Yorktown and the Blue Skies Gallery in Hampton, and at juried art shows throughout Virginia. Joan loved art and children, and combined her passions by teaching art as a volunteer in public and private schools across the Peninsula. She became a well-known artist for her decorated redware pottery. Unfortunately, Joan died from ovarian cancer on March 28, 2000 before reaching her 60th birthday. While Joan's years with her friends and family were far too few, her love and legacy lives on in her works.

The Nancy Thomas Gallery is honored to present this collection from Joan Tatum's estate. These pieces are all made by Joan and each one is different, with her own special touch. We remember Joan fondly. She is missed.
