Antique Bentwood Bride’s Box 19th Century Hand-Painted

Early brides

handpainted

bougth in richmond. couple had had it for many years.

paid $1200 for it.

Here we offer a Rare, maybe Unique,  hand-painted and handmade bentwood bridesbox, dating to the mid 19th C. NE US.

It measures 18"Long X12"Wide X5 1/2" Deep. The wall and the lid lip are each made from single pieces of wood ,steamed and bent into an oval. They are strapped and nailed together around a single piece of the same wood, cut into an oval and painted lid for an oval shaped box, which is again a single piece of wood which is bent and secured to an oval cut unfinished box bottom. The top has the  painting of a gentleman(the maker and groom) standing in a galleried meeting hall within  an oval pinstriped frame and a scalloped red border. The sides are painted  with a beautiful floral ornament . See photos. It has its original unfinished bottom. the tacking shafts are slightly visible, again see photos. It is in excellent condition, with only signs of its age.

An early 19th Century Continental Bride’s Box with bride and groom painted on the lid and floral and other motifs painted around the sides. The painting of the couple is particularly whimsical and makes up for the wear and tear of many years. The decoration around the sides is quite beautiful and can be more fully appreciated when the lid is removed to expose the sides. There are some losses to the top rim of the bottom section and to the bottom edge of the top. There are what look like masking tape type strips inside the curved bentwood of the cover which apparently were put there as support. The box does show the effects of being around for about 200 years and has acquired some overall soiling and edge chips, losses and some warping of the wood but the image of the bride and groom is particularly appealing which, to my eye, makes adding a bride’s box to a collection to be a enjoyable addition. The box measures 18 1/2 inches long by 11 3/4 inches wide by 5 3/4 inches high. The inventory number for this listing is 10,907.Shipping within the U.S. is free and available only to addresses within the U.S.
